AI consultant. Los Angeles.

AI integrated into the parts of your business where it actually pays off — and honest pushback on the parts where it won't. Based in Redondo Beach. Serving LA, the South Bay, and remote clients nationwide.

TL;DR

Breakwater Digital is an AI consulting practice based in Los Angeles (Redondo Beach). We help companies integrate GPT, Claude, Gemini, and open models into the workflows where they actually pay off: replacing manual work, building internal tools, shipping RAG systems on proprietary data, and designing custom agents. Typical engagement: $5K audit, $20K–$80K build, or $4K+/month retainer for ongoing AI ops.

What we build with AI

Less a demo. More a cost line that moves.

Workflow automation

Replace the repetitive manual work hiding inside your ops. Data entry, reporting, proposal drafting, lead research, CRM hygiene, inbox triage. Built with Zapier, n8n, Make, or purpose-built code — whichever is cheaper to own long-term.

RAG on proprietary data

Internal knowledge assistants that actually know your product, your docs, and your data. Customer support helpers. Sales enablement bots that can quote the exact clause of your contract. Done with sensible retrieval architecture — not a toy demo.

Custom AI agents

Agents that execute structured workflows end-to-end. Sales qualification. Research tasks. Document classification. Quote generation. Built with reliability and cost envelopes, not hype.

Internal tools + dashboards

Internal AI-enabled tools your team actually uses. Underwriting assistants, content briefs, customer profile summaries, account health scorecards. Usually a thin custom UI over the LLM of choice.

AI integrations

AI-powered features inside your existing product — summaries, search, classification, generation — with the right cost and performance guardrails. GPT, Claude, Gemini, or open models depending on the constraint.

AI ops audit

Half-day to two-day engagement: audit your workflows, surface the highest-leverage automation opportunities, and build a pragmatic roadmap with build-vs-buy recommendations and ROI math.

The honest part

AI doesn't fix everything. We'll tell you which parts.

Half the value of an AI consultant is talking you out of the projects that don't pencil. Customer-facing AI features rarely move retention unless AI is core to your product. "Replace my customer support with a chatbot" goes wrong more often than it goes right. Fine-tuning is almost never the answer on a modern stack. We'll tell you which projects we think are worth running, which aren't, and which ones to defer until the technology catches up.

AI consulting FAQ

What LA businesses ask first.

What does an AI consultant actually do?

An AI consultant helps you figure out where AI belongs in your business — and then helps you ship it. That means auditing your workflows to spot high-leverage automation opportunities, choosing the right model stack (GPT, Claude, Gemini, or open models), designing the retrieval and data architecture (often RAG), building internal tools or agents, and training your team on what to keep in-house vs outsource.

How much does an AI consulting engagement cost?

Short audits and proof-of-concept engagements run $5K–$15K. Build-and-integrate projects typically run $20K–$80K. Ongoing retainers for AI operations and tool-building start around $4K/month. We don't charge hourly — every engagement is fixed-scope or retainer with clear deliverables.

Should I build a custom GPT or use an existing tool?

Usually off-the-shelf first, custom second. For most SMB use cases — sales ops, content drafting, internal search, lightweight automation — a well-configured GPT or Claude project with the right prompts and data will get you 80% of the value for 10% of the cost. We help you figure out where custom builds genuinely pay off (typically RAG on proprietary data, agents on repetitive workflows, and customer-facing features where control matters).

What's RAG and when do I need it?

RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) is a pattern where the AI looks up information from your own documents or databases at answer time, instead of relying on its built-in training. You need RAG when you want an AI to answer questions using your proprietary knowledge — your docs, your customer data, your case files, your product catalog — without the cost and risk of fine-tuning. Common examples: internal knowledge bots, customer support assistants, sales enablement tools.

Can AI really help a small business, or is it hype?

Both. It's genuinely useful for three things in most small businesses: (1) replacing repetitive manual work — data entry, reporting, proposal generation, research; (2) providing always-on operational leverage — first-line support, internal knowledge retrieval, document processing; (3) enabling capabilities that used to require specialists — copy drafting, data analysis, light design. It's mostly hype when sold as a customer-facing feature where AI isn't actually core to the product.

Where are you based and who do you work with?

Based in Redondo Beach, CA. We serve LA, the South Bay, and remote clients nationwide. Industries range from fintech and insurance to food & beverage, fashion, music, advertising, healthcare, retail, SaaS, and real estate. Multilingual across English, Spanish, Hebrew, Portuguese, and Japanese.
